AI for Content Marketing: What You Should Know

By: Sydnee Stevenson

Published: November 23, 2025

AI has been the hot new thing in the marketing world over the past few years, and for good reason–it’s smart, it’s versatile, and it can add new insight and efficiencies to many of the things marketers do on a daily basis.

Since the public release of ChatGPT in November 2022, we’ve seen AI begin to permeate marketing disciplines ranging from audience research to paid media. But how does content marketing fit into the mix?

In this article, we’ll break down why artificial intelligence is valuable in content marketing, ways you can integrate AI into your content development process, and where we see this whole thing going in the future.

How is AI Used in Content Marketing?

Before we dive into all the ways AI can be used for content marketing, let’s take a trip down memory lane. If you were around in the marketing world in 2022 and 2023, you may recall the big frenzy around AI for content generation—blogs, emails, social media captions, you name it.

It seemed that every day, more and more businesses and marketers were leaning on AI to streamline and scale up their content creation processes—aka making AI their content ideator, researcher, writer, and editor all in one.

But then people realized something. If everyone is feeding the same AI tools the same prompts (i.e., “Write me a 1,000-word blog post about [X]”), stuff starts to sound the same pretty quickly, and nobody really has a competitive edge anymore.

So AI isn’t meant for content marketing. Case closed, right?

Well, not so fast.

As with many things in marketing and in life, getting the most out of AI—and protecting your brand in the process—is about balance. Mixing AI with human input is how the magic happens. So as you read through the following list of ways AI can be used in content marketing, keep in mind that it should be part of the picture—not the whole picture. Let’s jump in.

Content ideation

Every content development process starts with ideation. What the heck should we be writing about?

Turns out, AI can help with that. Artificial intelligence can process large sets of data about search terms, user intent, etc., far more quickly and accurately than a human, making it super helpful for spotting trends and identifying opportunities before your competitors jump on them.

Content research

Once you have your data-backed topic in mind, you’ll need research to make sure your content is up-to-date and accurate. It’s time for the research process.

Historically, research meant combing through pages upon pages of content to understand themes, validate information, and so on and so forth. Thanks to AI’s superhuman processing capabilities, it can significantly speed up this process, analyzing large amounts of information and boiling it down to the most important points you can use to inform your content.

Content competitive analysis

A big part of SEO strategy is understanding what your successful competitors are doing to gain their prominent spots in the SERPs. And guess what? AI can help with that, too.

You can do this by giving ChatGPT (or your tool of choice) the URLs of 3-4 competitors that are winning for your target terms and asking it what they do well. Within seconds, it’ll give you a clear picture of what’s working for them and how you can emulate it in your own content.

Content outlining

Winning in SEO requires a thoughtful approach to your content—heading tags, body copy, the whole nine yards. You’ll want to make sure you’re hitting the right topics with the right structure and level of detail to be competitive. AI can assist by analyzing successful content and giving you a rough outline that your human strategists can revise and refine until it’s just right.

Content writing

It’s relatively common knowledge nowadays that AI is pretty good at writing content—so much so that over 40% of marketers surveyed in a 2024 study reported using AI tools weekly for this exact purpose.

But while we’re on this topic, be warned: if you take the AI output exactly as is with no adjustments, your customers (and likely your boss, too) aren’t going to be very impressed. The trick is to use AI as a springboard for ideas (if you need to) and use your own skill and creativity to take it across the finish line.

Content editing and proofreading

Editing and proofreading have long been the forgotten middle children of the content marketing process, but we’re happy to report that AI can help make them a whole lot easier.

Thanks to tools like Grammarly, you can not only identify and correct misspellings and grammatical errors, but also get helpful suggestions for making your content clearer, more concise, and easier to understand. +1 for AI.

Content repurposing

Creating a great piece of content is a big accomplishment, but it shouldn’t stop there. Helpful content can be repurposed and redistributed across multiple channels to maximize its impact, and AI can help you with this process. “How?” you might ask.

Let’s say you have a blog post. With a tool like Lumen5, you can easily transform that blog into a video to be shared on Instagram or TikTok and reach a brand-new audience. Here are a few other AI content repurposing tools we love:

  • Repurpose.io converts video and audio content into bite-sized clips suitable for various social media platforms.
  • Lately.ai uses natural language processing to pull out key points from long-form content and automatically generate optimized social media posts.
  • Jasper can help rewrite and reframe text, making it easier to adapt a single piece of content for different audiences or formats.
  • Canva transforms existing content into various visually engaging formats. For instance, you can take a blog post and create an infographic or a series of social media graphics to highlight key points.

Data analytics and insights

Good content marketing isn’t something you can just set and forget. To stay ahead of the curve, you’ll need to continuously monitor your performance and make adjustments as you go. There are a host of ways AI can help you do this better and more efficiently.

For example, Insights from BrightEdge uses AI-powered data aggregation to provide real-time, actionable insights on your search performance. It can simplify massive datasets into bite-sized takeaways, then prioritize them so you know what to act on first.

Unique Advantages of AI for Content Marketing

I’ll always be a fan of human involvement in the content process, but I also believe in giving credit where credit is due. And in this case, the truth is that AI truly does excel at some parts of content marketing in ways humans have yet to match.

To start—as we’ve mentioned previously—AI-powered tools are great at processing large datasets quickly, which means more precise audience segmentation and personalized content recommendations than traditional human analysis. They can automate routine tasks—content ideation, proofreading, scheduling, performance tracking, etc.—freeing up marketers to focus on strategic creativity.

On top of this, AI can provide real-time insights and predictive analytics that allow for agile adjustments to content strategies that human efforts might lag behind. This blend of speed, scalability, and data-driven optimization offers a competitive advantage that pure human input may struggle to match.

Using AI to Enhance SEO and Content Marketing Strategies

AI is incredibly smart technology for enhancing SEO and content marketing efforts—the operative word being enhancing, not replacing. The best outcomes combine data-driven insights with human creativity and skill.  With that said, here are our tips for incorporating AI the right way to level up your content marketing.

  1. Start by leveraging AI for data-driven tasks like keyword research, content gap analysis, and competitive benchmarking to pinpoint high-impact topics and trends.
  2. Use AI-powered tools to optimize on-page elements like meta descriptions and titles, and generate tailored content suggestions based on audience behavior and search intent. Remember to maintain quality—and your brand voice—by having humans review AI-generated outputs so your final product is authentic and engaging.
  3. Finally, use AI to continually monitor performance metrics and adjust your strategy, as both AI algorithms and market trends evolve over time.

The Future of AI and Content Marketing

What is the future of content marketing with AI?

I envision AI shaping a future of more data-driven, efficient, and targeted content marketing. Now that marketers can access the capabilities of AI for data processing and automation, it’s easier than ever to understand customer behavior and deliver content that matches what they’re looking for at scale.

Will content marketers be replaced by AI?

In my humble opinion, no. AI is great for assisting many of the things content marketers do (research, automation, etc.), but it can’t replicate the real human insights, experience, and creativity that take content from good to truly great. If you want your content—and thereby, your brand—to stand out, you’re going to need to keep human input an integral part of your content marketing efforts.
